Hi there! I am Dr. Steve Rittner Director of The Rittners Floral School in Boston, MA. and I am a flower arranging and floral design expert!
It didn't just happen! How did I get to be a floral expert?
Accident of birth helped. I am a third generation in the floral field. I grew up in my grandparents' and parents' flower shop, and in the school of floral design that they established over 60 years ago and that I own and run today!
Growing up in the floral field was amazing. I am not going to tell you how many floral arrangements that I have made over the years,wires taped, and bows created... but it's a lot. The folks sure knew how to keep me out of mischief! But the immense design time practice was invaluable. In addition, topics about flower care and handling, floral design theory and practice, retail floristry technical information and gossip from the floral industry were the mainstay of dinner conversation as well as during working hours.......
Growing up in an environment where folks from all over the world arrive in Boston to learn from my parents, gave me the advantage of incredible mentors.
I went on to get four university degrees, including a Masters in Education and a Doctorate in Education, essential for one who is a floral design educator. My doctorate dealt with individual characteristics and how they interact with specific approaches to teaching--as it applies to teaching a motor performance task--namely floral designing. In other words, I am very much not only a floral design expert but also a specialist in teaching floral art.
Rittners School of Floral Design remains a major center for floral art learning, and continues to attract folks from all over North America and abroad, in large part to the excellence of our teaching.
I have been teaching floral designing for over 30 years (Wow! You are thinking... He must really be old!) and I am very good at what I do.
My students rarely sleep in my class, (the ultimate compliment) and tell me that my teaching approach is entertaining, fast moving, engaging, irrreverant and great fun! (I can live with that!)
There are many great floral designers who spend a lot of time and effort running around working hard at self promotion. We have never really felt totally at ease with that approach. Bombast is just not our style. Instead we have always focused our efforts on working very hard at developing the various resources available for our students. It's not just how good we are...It's how good we make the educational experience here at Rittners for our students.
