Rittners School Of Floral Design
In Boston Presents.....

How To Make A Biedermeier Centerpiece

"A Biedermeier Centerpiece?" you ask..."What's that?"

Yes, I agree the name sounds very complicated and forboding!!!

But the style is quite easy.......So easy, in fact that I would bet that you will be cranking out Biedermeiers much faster than a shopping trip to a mall!!!

A Biedermeier is simply an arrangement, with flowers placed next to each other in concentric circles............

You can see that in this arrangement here, can't you?

First we have a row of foliage......Then of carnations.........Then of roses...... Next of poms, and finally some filler materials

Easy to understand?? You bet......and even easier to stylize!!!

What You Will Need

• A container
• Foam
• Carnations
• Roses
• Poms
• A filler flower
• Some foliage
• A candle

We start with the container..........Containers really set the stage for any floral design......

The container is a very simple one, and not very expensive, so we are not worrying about covering it up with our foliage or flowers......

We fill the container with foam, and place a doily of foliage around in a circle......In this case the doily is made up of some colorful oak leaves..........

Next, lets take some carnations and place them into a circle over the oak leaves...........The flowers go into a circle with one touching the next one and so on, with no spaces between them...............

Next lets add some roses. The roses also go in a circle just above the carnations..........I think you can see that this construction is quite methodical and very easy to accomplish...............

Let's now add another circle of flowers........This time we are using some daisy poms........

Notice that the daisy pom circle is a little smaller than the circle of roses, which is smaller still than the circle of carnations.

The overall feeling is a gentle roundy, moundy effect.........

Finally we finish off the design with a candle and a little filler material........ The candle is intended only for decorative purposes.........and not to be lit......

Some variations??

Contents can be varied to come up with an enormous assortment of possibilities. Consider picking randomly one of each Numbers I, II,III and IV below.

I. In place of carnations you could use : sunflowers, poms, chrysanthemums, cymbidium orchids, allium, protea, peony, lilies, anthurium, fujis or roses.........

II. In place of roses you could use: sweet william, Iris, daffodils, miniature carnations, tulips, ranunculus, daisies, or lisianthu

III. In place of poms you could use: roses, miniature carnations, button poms, marguerites, nerines, yarrow, lilies, eryngium, or cut sections of bells of irelan

IV. Possible fillers could include astilbe, montecasino, wax flower, solid ago, solid aster, heather, leptospermum, genista, statice, and german statice

Play with these combinations, and you have literally hundreds of designs from this one lesson!!!!!!!!!!
