Rittners School Of Floral Design
In Boston Presents....

Fun With Colored Foam-7

The various rainbow colored foams available courtesy of the Smithers Oasis Company are adding a totally new and different dimension to floral designing options.. Oasis has always been on the cutting edge when it comes creating wonderful products for us to use in our designing.

The concept behiind colored foam is quite simple. Instead of hiding our foam mechanics with foliage or moss, why not let it work aesthetically as well as structurally? Let the foam itself become an actual part of the design to be viewed, instead of hiding it and having it work in the background.

With all kinds of bright and attractive colors, the creative possibilities are endless!

This is a fun design to make. It is quite large. It is bright and optimistic. Best of all it is easy to make. ENJOY!

What You Will Need

  • Glass or plastic container
  • Roses
  • Larkspur
  • Salal
  • Colored foam
  • Maline

As with most of our designs using rainbow foam, we are using a clear vase to really show off the foam materials. In this case our base is actually plastic, though glassware is also a definite possibility.

Stuff the base with small rectangles and squares of yellow foam saturated with water.

Add more water to the base.

Start the design by placing a column of larkspur into the center of the foam.

Create a doily of foliage using salal leaves.

Place some roses into the center of the design, surrounding the larkspur.

Continue adding roses in a circular pattern around the larkspur.

The final result feels like a bouquet with a dramatic section emerging from its center.

We could stop at this point if we wanted to, however, we can add one more small step to this design......

A little bow using yellow maline or tulle, creates an interesting counterpoint to the design and links the top section of larkspur to the middle section of the roses and finally to the base of yellow foam.

Here is a comparison of the design with and without the yellow maline bow. (You may like it either way!)
